International Wildlife Day Speech
In honor of World Wildlife Day and the Kenya Wildlife Service, I will be posting some of the essays from our Wildlife Conservation Student Group project in Kajiado, Kenya. The first essay is included below and is written by two of our Year 10 students. I am so inspired and moved by these words. There is such hope for the future with these children’s voices reaching out into the world today.
Whenever one hears of the African plains, a common picture instantly comes to mind. One imagines beautiful wide-open spaces. One visualizes extensive grass plains being blown back and forth by the cool African breeze, wildlife grazing freely and intermingling amongst one another. This is the pride of Africans.
From the enormous elephants to the little birds, from the crocodiles in the water to the vultures in the air, the African plains are littered with diversity of wildlife. This is one of the reasons the African plains are so amazing.
To whom much is given, much is expected; therefore we must do our part in the conservation of our beautiful African wildlife. Be it in a small or big way, let us do our part in nurturing a loving towards preservation of wildlife. Since we co-exist with one another, African people should do their best to ensure the safety of African wildlife. If we are able to achieve this dream we are sharing, our children and grandchildren will be able to admire the wildlife we see today. Let us aim to leave a positive legacy.
We ask you, do you want to be remembered as the generation that cleared out the entire wildlife, or be the heroes that fought to preserve the animal population. This we leave up to you to decide, but as for us, our ambition is clear, since our wildlife is part of our heritage, we shall make it our responsibility to see that it survives in the way that nature intended.

The World is full of amazing creatures from every possible medium. From the birds of the air to the majestic whales of the sea, wildlife abounds in the most unusual and unexpected places. Wildlife benefits us in many ways, and has since time out of mind. World Wildlife day is a day to remind us of our responsibilities to our world and the lifeforms we share it with.
On March 3rd, 1973 the United Nations General Assembly took a stand against to protect Endangered Species throughout the world.
Whether plant or animal, the importance of these species in every area of human life, from culinary to medical, could not be understated. At this time hundreds of endangered species were being threatened every year, and extinction was at a staggeringly high rate. CITES was put into place (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) to ensure that the world did not continue to hemorrhage species that would never be seen from again.
On December 20th, 2013 another step was taken to help spread awareness of the fragility of endangered species in the world. At its 68th session, the UN declared that each year World Wildlife Day would be dedicated to a new purpose and idea to help keep people abreast of the changing nature of our world, and the treasures we stand to lose from the animal and plant kingdom if we don’t take care.
The first thing that always comes to mind when we think about World Wildlife Day is heading out to our local zoo or botanical conservatory and reminding ourselves of the vast variety of life our world offers.
If you have children, this can be one of the best ways to really introduce them to the wonders of the animal and plant kingdom. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, an outdoor excursion with a book of local flora and fauna (That’s plants and animals) can help make that connection come even closer to home.

There are few things as important as making sure that the world’s biosphere remains healthy, every time we lose a plant or animal, we have no way of knowing if a cure for a disease or some new medical breakthrough was lost with them. Like forests, wildlife is also a national resource, which not only helps in maintaining the ecological balance but is also beneficial from economic, recreational and aesthetic points of view. There was a time when human interference was minimum the number of wild animals was quite high and there was no problem of their protection or conservation. But, with the expansion of agriculture, settlement, industrial and other developmental activities and mainly due to greed of man, the number of wild animals gradually became lesser and lesser. With the result that several species of animals have become extinct and several, others are on the verge of being so.
Deforestation is also one of the main reasons for the loss of wildlife. Mass killings of wild animals for their meat, bones, fur, teeth, hair, skin, etc., are going on throughout the world. Therefore, the need for wildlife conservation has now become a necessity.
Population growth, expansion of agriculture and livestock raising building of cities and roads, and pollution are among the many pressures on the natural habitat of wildlife. Along with illegal hunting, habitat reduction and its degradation has threatened the bio-diversity of the regions where these are rampant.
Preservation of wildlife does not mean a blanket protection to all faunal and floral species; rather, it implies a proper, judicious control over the multiplication of plants and animals, which interact together to provide a proper environment to man whose very existence is in peril today.
Due to the irrational use of natural and biotic resources of the earth in the past, most of the wildlife has been destroyed beyond retrieval. It is our urgent duty to protect the natural splendor of ecosystems and to evolve a system of co-existence with every living creature upon the earth.
Although must countries of the world are very particular regarding conservation of wildlife, the number of wild animals is reducing day by day. World Wild Life Fund is the international agency, which is doing commendable work in promoting the protection of wildlife. There are national agencies also engaged in the conservation of wildlife.
