विश्व रेडक्रॉस दिवस (World Red Cross Day) को अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय स्वंयसेवक दिवस के रूप में भी मनाया जाता है। करीब 150 वर्षों से सम्पूर्ण विश्व में रेडक्रॉस दिवस को स्वंय सेवक असहाय एवं पीड़ित मानवता की सहायता के लिए मनाते आ रहे हैं। भारत में वर्ष 1920 में पार्लियामेंट्री एक्ट के तहत भारतीय रेडक्रॉस सोसायटी का गठन हुआ, तब से रेडक्रॉस के सेवक भारत में अनेक प्रकार की समस्याओं में लगातार निस्वार्थ भाव से अपनी सेवाएं दे रहे हैं। अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय रेडक्रॉस ने वर्ष 1920 को अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय रेडक्रॉस ‘Find the Volunteer inside You’ (अपने अन्दर के स्वयं सेवक को पहचानें) का नारा दिया है। विश्व के लगभग दो सौ देश रेडक्रॉस के विचार पर पूरी तरह से सहमति दे चूूूूके है और सभी देशों के सैनिकों ने चिकित्सा के साथ साथ्ा प्रकृति के द्वारा हाेने वाले महाविनाश के द्वारा फंसे लोगों की मदद के लिए रेडक्रॉस हमेशा तैयार रहता है
रेडक्रॉस अभियान को महान मानवता प्रेमी जीन हेनरी डयूनेन्ट ने सम्पूर्ण विश्व में चलाया जिनका जन्म 8 मई 1828 में हुआ था। इसलिए उनके जन्म दिवस 8 मई को विश्व रेडक्रॉस दिवस के रूप में विश्वभर में मनाया जाता है। और उन्होंने समाज सेवा के क्षेत्र में उल्लेखनीय कार्य किया और लोगों को मानवता की सेवा के लिए प्रेरित किया। मानवता की सेवा करने वाले लोगों के लिए उन्होने रेडक्रॉस नामक सोसायटी का गठन किया वर्तमान में विश्व के 186 देशों में रेडक्रॉस सोसायटी कार्य कर रही है। वर्ष 1901 में हेनरी डयूनेंट को मानव सेवा के कार्यों के लिए पहला नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार दिया गया ।इस संस्था की पहचान के लिए सफ़ेद पट्टी पर लाल रंग के क्रास चिह्न को मान्यता दी गई। आज यह चिह्न पूरे विश्व में पीड़ित मानवता की सेवा का प्रतीक बन गया है। इसके साथ ही विश्व का पहला ब्लड बैंक रेडक्रॉस की पहल पर अमेरिका में 1937 में खोला गया । आज विश्व के अधिकांश ब्लड बैंकों का संचालन रेडक्रॉस एवं उसकी सहयोगी संस्थाओं के द्वारा किया जाता है। रेडक्रॉस द्वारा चलाए गए रक्तदान जागरूकता अभियान के कारण ही आज थैलेसिमिया, कैंसर, एनीमिया जैसी अनेक जानलेवा बीमारियों से हजारों लोगों की जान बच रही है।

World Red Cross day means 8th of May is celebrated every year as the birthday anniversary of founder of the Red Cross. The principles of the Red Cross Truce was presented and approved on 15th International Conference at Tokyo in the year 1934 to get applicable all across the world in different regions. The possibility of its annual celebration was asked to the “League of the Red Cross Societies (LORCS)” by the International Federation of the Red Cross Societies (IFRC) General Assembly. And just 2 years later the proposal of celebrating this day annually was adopted and was first celebrated as the Red Cross Day on 8th of May in 1948. Later, it was officially named as the “World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day” in the year 1984.
World Red Cross Day is celebrated by the people on international level to alleviate people’s suffering, enhancing their dignity, protecting their life from emergencies and lots of natural disasters including epidemic diseases, flood and earthquakes.
